Fraunhofer-Institute for Applied Materials Research in Bremen, Germany organized a symposium on metal foams in March 1997 and attracted 90 participants - about 50% of them coming from research laboratories and universities, 50% from companies - who attended the 1 ½ day meeting on which 18 talks were given. The success of this symposium was the reason that a similar meeting was organised for the USA by the newly set up Fraunhofer Resource Center in Delaware. Almost 50 participants enjoyed an interesting coming together, many stimulating discussions and many new insights into the exiting new world of metal foams.
